Gonçalo Tocha

Filmmaker and musician. He was born in Lisbon and is the grandchild of people form the Island of A. Migue, Azores.
He took a postgraduate course at the Faculty of Letters of Lisbon in 2003 and was a professor of Portuguese for foreigners. At the university he created NuCiVo (Film and Video Nucleus) where he was responsible for its programming and production for 6 years. He worked as a theater videographer (Trout, Grupo Teatro de Letras) and music (Deolinda, Bandarra). His first feature film “Balaou” (2007), a tribute film to his mother shot in São Miguel, won the Best Portuguese Film and Best Picture at Indielisboa 2007 and was shown on RTP2 and the French-German channel ARTE. His second feature “É NA TERRA NÃO É NA LUA” (IS IN THE LAND IS NOT THE MOON) (2011), was shot entirely on Corvo Island, premiered world-wide at the 2011 Locarno Festival, where he got a special mention from the jury. He won 4 more prizes: in Doclisboa 2011; BAFICI (Buenos Aires) 2012; San Francisco Int. Film Festival 2012; DocumentaMadrid 2012 and had a commercial debut in Portugal (Porto and Lisbon) and in New York at the Anthology Film Archives. In 2012 he was invited to make two more films, one for the European Capital of Culture – Guimarães 2012, “TORRES & COMETAS”, which premiered internationally at the Rotterdam Festival 2013 and another for the program “Estaleiro do Festival do Vila do Conde”, “A MÃE E O MAR” (MOTHER AND THE SEA) on the female fishing women of Vila Chã, to debut in July 2013.
