Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar – Late Neolithic / Chalcolithic (3200-1200 BC)
The megalithic tombs of Alcalar are ancient funerary temples that were built and used for several generations, for several centuries, in the 3rd millennium before the beginning of the Christian era. The whole, with the tombs organized in several groups, constitutes a necropolis located in the immediate vicinity of a former housing settlement, whose ruins extend over an area of about 20 hectares. Discovered and explored since the end of the 19th century, the monuments are classified as National Monument. A part of the tombs is open to the visiting public and has an Interpretive Center. Since March 24, 2012, the management of this cultural equipment has been jointly managed by the Regional Directorate for Culture of the Algarve and the Museum of Portimão, entities that carry out extension and cultural and tourist promotion activities and research projects.
The monuments of the eastern tomb cluster of the megalithic necropolis are musealized and can be visited. The monuments of the central tomb cluster are situated on public grounds and are also accessible to visitors. The Chalcolithic village and the other monuments are located in private properties, with conditioned access to the previous authorization of the respective owners. The Interpretation Center, installed in the year 2000 to support visitors, created the infrastructure necessary for the explanation and interpretation of the sites visited.
